Remote Say/Pose

(24 July, 2000)
It is possible to make actions visible and speech audible to different rooms than those in which they originate. This makes it possible to create things like stages that are distinct rooms from the audience, observation points, etceteras.

Be aware that the use of this to create areas from which to spy on other rooms where not contextually appropriate is strongly discouraged. If a wizard discovers such an area, particularly if there are complaints, the entire area may be summarily @rec'd and your building privileges suspended. Widespread abuse of this will quickly lead to it becoming wizard-only. Usually, it is best to maintain parallel between any areas using this technique. That is: if you can hear people in room A from room B, then you should be able to hear people in room B from room A.

Update: There is now a global - @sweep - that will provide a list of all players listening to a particular room. Thanks to Den for the program and for porting it to Peg.

To use the basic remote say and remote post, you need only create a property on your rooms called _rsayrooms that includes a space-separated list of rooms from which the current room should be audible. For example:

@set #1234=_rsay: 5678 9012

... will cause everything said or posed in room #1234 to be heard or seen in rooms #5678 and #9012.
