The Superstition Mountains in central
Arizona stand as a monument to our venerable Earth. The
many cliff dwellings and caves in the area show signs of
habitation back as far as a thousand years. The history of
the Superstitions is a rich tapestry of ghosts, myths, and
legends, beginning with the stories of the Pima and Apache
and continuing through the tales of the Lost Dutchman
mine.
Apache Junction, originally the simple
meeting place of two highways, has blossomed with suburban
development, growing to join the Greater Phoenix Area and
expanding its edges. In the late 1990s, it reached the
foothills of the Superstition Wilderness. At the mouth of
Hieroglyphic Canyon, under the scrutiny of these ancient
Superstitions, you can observe centuries of human touch -
from Salado or Hohokam petroglyphs on the rocks to the
recent residential development in the distance.
What better place to celebrate the
beginning of the final year of the millennium?
