AsusNotebookInstall

Starting from this ASUS support forum post.

After a lot blood sweat and tears, I have Windows XP Professional SP3+ running on an Asus X83VB-X2. I thought I would post an updated summary of how to do this, with current driver links. I gather there is some variability in the specific chips in different notebooks within this model. In particular, the video, audio and LAN. So, your mileage may vary.

First, you need to produce a Windows XP installation CD that includes the SATA storage driver. Unfortunately, since Willy's original post, Intel has removed *everything* he links to from their site. I *think* this is the correct SATA chipset package to use:

You can also use your favorite search engine to look for "f6flpy3286.zip" and download it from some semi-anonymous beneficiary ... if you are brave.

I didn't want to produce multiple discs. So, I slipstreamed in several drivers, just to make sure I got the right one.

You will use nLite to slipstream that into your Windows XP SP3 install disc, as per Willy's directions (second post in this thread).

After you have Windows installed, you need to install drivers and utilities. Here they are in the preferred order (as per this post):

Chipset Driver

The Vista package on the driver disk I got with the notebook also included the Windows XP files. So, I used that. You might be able to get it from the X83VB downloads page in the Vista drivers:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=X83VB

ATKACPI Driver

From the X59SR downloads, as per Willy:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=X59SR

NVidia GEForce 9300M GS VGA Driver

From NVidia. Their auto-detect thing did not work for me. Here's a direct link to the current download page:

Audio Driver

It appears that it is unnecessary to install the UAA driver with SP3+.

The audio driver for my X83VB-X2 was part of the NVidia video driver package.

Lan Driver:

Realtek GbE & FE Ethernet PCI-E NIC Driver

Card Reader

From the X59SR downloads, as per Willy:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=X59SR

RICOH Card Reader

The three unknowns in Device Manager are RICOH R5C833 card reader components. I found that the drivers on the Vista driver disk that came with my notebook worked fine for me. I think the same drivers can be downloaded from:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=X83VB

Wireless Console Utility

First the Wireless Console Utility from the X59SR downloads, as per Willy:

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=X59SR

Bluetooth

I was not able to get Bluetooth working, not even under the Vista installation that came on the system. Neither pressing FN+F2 nor pressing the Bluetooth button does anything. When trying to install the Bluetooth driver, under Vista or XP, the installer reports that there is no Bluetooth device. There is a Bluetooth light on the machine and, a Bluetooth button.

Wireless Network Interface

My X83VB-X2 turned out to have an Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN wireless adapter, rather than the Atheros adapter from the X59SR. That driver is here:

IR Driver

From a previous post from Willy:

The remaining utilities are from the X59SR driver downloads, as per Willy:

Synaptics Touchpad Utility

ATK_MEDIA Utility

ATK_Hotkey Utility

ATKOSD2 Utility

ATK Generic Function Utility

ASUS NB Probe

Power4 Gear Utility for WIN XP

ASUS IP Switch Utility

Life Frame Utility

ExpressGate utility

MultiFrame Utility

SPLENDID Utility

KB_filter Driver
